Trash To Treasure

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Strolling among rusty, chippy, dusty stuff is good for my soul.  I can’t explain it, but there’s nothing else that stirs my creativity and inspires me more.  Traveling to Round Top twice a year is like a shot in the arm!

Gypsty Wagon at Round Top

As my pickin’ buddy, Dana of Tattered Style, and I pulled into town, we stopped to say “howdy” to Carley and Johnny Seale, of The Gypsy Wagon, and checked out their newly renovated Airstream!  She’s a beauty!

The Gypsy Wagon

The Gypsy Wagon is located right across the street from Round Top’s square and Royers Round Top Cafe!  They’ll be back next time, so don’t miss seeing them next Spring!

vintage target practice poster

This vintage target practice poster was my first purchase from British Route Sign Designs!  I can’t wait to hang it.  I’m going to need a little help…I want to hang it high at the top of my stairwell which is going to be a little tricky…Don’t you love him?

Dead People's Stuff

Hands down, the best name of an antique or junk store ever!

One of the best parts of Round Top is meeting new friends.  Lynette and Gordon Harrison, from Kansas, made our day!  Lynette quickly picked up on the fact that Dana and I loved art, as we were perusing through her gorgeous space.  She led us to meet her hubby, Gordon, who is an avid art lover and fine vintage frame collector.

vintage portrait

Gordon gave me a great deal on this beautiful lady and made me very happy!!  Isn’t she beautiful?  I’m a bit addicted to collecting vintage art…ok, a lot addicted…but there are worse addictions, right?

vintage rosaries

I picked these vintage rosaries (another collection of mine) up in the first shop I popped in at Marburger Farms.  I love them because they’re so long!  They hang below my belt and I love to pile on several at a time!  The wooden cylinder beads are my favorite!  I’ve never seen these before…

It was pretty cool when my friends from Dallas Market Center and Lisa, from Dwell With Dignity, ran into Dana and I in one of the Marburger tents.  Ideas started flying and you’ll be hearing about exciting things that originated in these conversations later…

I loved these stripey twin bed headboards!

The SHOP Antiques is always one of my favorite stops.  Mandie Murphree and her dad, Garland, collect vintage carnival, amusement park and circus items.  They were featured on the History Channel’s American Pickers on the  August 1st episode.  Their finds are amazing!

I wish these boots that I saw at Bull Chic (another great shop name!) would have fit me!  They’re perfect!

Janet Waldrop, of Skip To My Lou, is another creative genius! She produces each piece of her jewelry with her own two hands out of unique vintage bits and baubles.  She also writes a short story about each one on an old photograph where her jewelry is displayed.  Each and every piece…amazing!

We found British Route Sign Designs during our last trip in the fields of Warrington and fell in love with Dwayne, the owner, and all of his route signs.  He tackled setting up at Marburger this year and his space looked spectacular!

I little more than halfway through the first day of  Marburger Farm’s opening day, Lorriane White had already sold half of her stock.  Her repurposed furniture and ‘burlamps’ are unique and wonderful!

Are you dying over that yellow sofa?  I could go on forever….the good finds go on and on…just wish my money would go on and on…

That’s it until the Spring….

Who’s ready to go with me next time?

Thrill Of The Hunt

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Saturday my precious friend, Dana of Tattered Style, and I did a little treasure hunting and I thought I would share some of my finds!

vintage bertoia chair

My “find of the day” was this vintage Bertoia chair.  After we had a delicious salad at Patina Green, we spotted this beauty tucked away in a corner.  I love it’s fun chippy paint!

minnow trap

It’s likely that all of my other finds will end up at Stash {vintage finds}, my little space inside Indie Genius.  This old minnow trap will soon become a pendant light!

vintage revolving lamp

How cool is this little lamp?  The image inside no longer revolves, but the lamp works like a charm and it says “The Fountain of Youth” at the bottom.  So fun!

vintage tins

These vintage tins are in perfect condition.  Ready to store all of your baubles!

vintage safety deposit box

Isn’t that stamp on top of this old safety deposit box great?  I may be keeping the C…it will probably end up on the fence in my backyard…

original painting

A treasure hunt is never successful without a great piece of art!   I’m not sure if you can tell, but this is a painting of a boy who has fallen asleep on his book.  The custom frame is fab and makes the orange really pop!

clabber girl

Giant Clabber Girl!  Turquoise and red…heaven!

vintage photo

This handsome man is getting ready for a make-over!  I have big plans for him and I’ll share the end results later…

Not a bad day, right?

Vintage On The Green

Friday, August 5th, 2011

OK…just when I think I’m the Queen of Knowing It All about what’s going on in my neighborhood, Jenny of Along Came Splendor, finds something in my own backyard that I know “nothing” about!  Thanks, sweet Jenny, for keeping me “grounded” and sharing with me about The Vintagemobile!!

the vintagemobile

This super rad bus is full of vintage clothing and treasures and will be parked at SMOKE and The Belmont Bar’s parking lots every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) from 11-4.  Oh, so Austin!

This large green bus is the brainchild of Jeremy Turner and his bride, Kelsey.  They’re all about making the neighborhood a better place by supporting the  local community by sharing the opportunity to buy green.

the vintagemobile owners

Looks like I have a regular weekend stop added to my schedule!  Who wants to meet at The Vintagemobile and talk about our finds at the Belmont Bar?  Sounds like a perfect Saturday afternoon to me!

Planning Christmas In July

It’s never too early to plan a little Christmas shopping, right?

Planning Perfection

Monday, June 20th, 2011

After reuniting with some of my very best college friends in the fall of 2010, we determined that 2011 should be a year of celebration and new beginnings and what better way to celebrate than with a trip to Paris!  One of my friends, Mary Charles, had a daughter who would be graduating in May 2011 and planning to move to Paris to study at Cordon Bleu, so planning a trip around the beginning of her new studies made sense.

Red Shed/Riverside Travel

We all lead busy lives and are spread across Dallas, Houston, College Station and Aiken, South Carolina, so the help of Valerie, at Riverside Travel, was essential!  This knowledgable travel agency/French antique shop specializes in French flea market shopping trips and was recently featured in Flea Market Style magazine.  Hands down, Valerie’s expertise and attention to detail played the #1 biggest part in our ease of travel and ability to see that all of our individual priorities were met.  My two favorite “hook-ups” from Valerie were our centrally located hotel and our personal shopping guide.

Le Littre Hotel Paris

Valerie’s hotel suggestion, Le Littr’e,  was affordable, spacious and accomodating…much more than I ever expected!  Our party of 5 had private access to their top floor, two-bedroom suite that was like no other European hotel experience that any of us ever had in past travel experiences.  Our bathrooms were huge… with all of the modern amenities that all Americans love!  The staff took great care of us and is even taking care of packing and shipping a flea market art treasure to me.

My top priority in Paris was experiencing Les Puces de Saint-Quen at Porte de Clignancourt.  Strolling around the Eiffel Tower, going to the Lourve, Musee de Orsay, etc were on my list of to-do’s…but at the top?  Les Puces (The Fleas)!  Hearing that I was a “flea freak”, Valerie told me about my soon-to-be Paris BFF, Jodie!

Jodie in Paris

Jodie Hutchins is an absolute doll and our greatest resource during our time in Paris!  Her personal shopping and guide service is a must for anyone who plans to spend a day, or more, shopping the flea or luxury designers in France.  She asks what you would like to find prior to your arrival and scours the shops before you get there, so that there’s no time waisted on hunting for that specific vintage Hermes’ bag or Christian Louboutin nude stiletto.   Her fluent English and French allow for perfect translations and negotiations.  Voila!   I can’t wait to go back to Paris and see her!  I truly made a new friend.  (Double cheek kisses to you, Jodie!)

I was in awe at the variety of vintage art everywhere!  (my obsession…)

Paris flea market

Everything seemed to be beautiful in Paris…even “the fleas”

Here are a few of my favorite shots from our day…

Jodie led us to a tucked-away section that she said was much like “Sanford and Son” where we found tons of treasures and one of my new art treasures…a real deal at 60 Euros!

Don’t Get Malled!

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

When was the last time you went to the mall and the shop girl asked if she could get you something to drink while you shopped?  That’s what I thought….How about a little spiced cookie while you gather those sweet deals?

Get to the Bishop Arts District this Thursday through Saturday and enjoy the personalized TLC that you deserve while you spend your well-earned money with local shop-owners that appreciate your business!

Be sure to stop by Indigo 1745 where my friend, Denise Manoy, will be offering hourly specials while you sip and shop.  This shop truly rocks with clothing and gifts for men and women.  You’ll thank me later…

Here’s a couple of things from Indigo that would be perfect for the next couple of week’s worth of holiday parties you have on that busy calendar of yours!

Dirt is officially my new favorite florist….but they’re SO much more than a flower shop!  The husband/wife team here will blow you away with their talent.  It’s seriously one of the most well-done stores I’ve evern been in, so you’ll want to make sure you stop by while you’re jingling around the arts district.  I love picking up their little succulents in colorful (sometimes vintage) cans to use as hostess gifts or anytime I need something to brighten someone’s day.  They use colorful tumbled glass to top off the dirt around the top of many of their plants.  It’s gorgeous!

Zola’s Everyday Vintage has the very best selcetion of quality vintage clothing in Dallas and is located directly across from Dirt…how convenient!  I love incorporating vintage into my wardrobe for the holidays by adding a fun swing coat or shimmery clutch.  You will go ‘crazy” when you see all of the goodies here!  (Note to self…get there before I let this post go up…there are several things there right now that I want to snag before the crowds arrive!)  I snagged this picture from Zola’s Facebook page…a great example of holiday vintage fashion.

Last, and certainly not least, make sure that you stop by Make and Indie Genius for the best selection of handmade and vintage gifts. If you’re feeling ambitious and want to learn a craft to create for the holidays, Julie Kim, the brainchild of Make and Indie Geinus, is your gal!  Find her list of classes here and get busy!  Indie Genius is packed with handmade and vintage ware for everyone!  I re-stocked Stash {Vintage Finds} with lots of fun treats last night that would be great gifts, including a prestine stocked picnic trunk and a cute little poker kit.

Can’t wait to see you there…jingling all the way!
