Scrub-A-Dub-Dub

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

This just adds fuel to the flame of my desire to start knitting again!  I never thought of knitting with twine, but it makes total sense to get the end result of a great pot scrubber!

Here’s what you need:

common garden, hemp or linen twine found in most hardware stores

Size 7 needles

Heavy black thread

Directions:  Cast on 12 stitches.  Garter stitch until you form a square.  Cast off.  Sew it closed with blanket stitch in contracting heavy black thread.  Stuff with wool.  Wool is resistant to water and naturally anti-bacterial.  A piece of natural or synthetic sponge would work too.

Bombs Away!

Monday, September 19th, 2011

The Winspear Opera House got a psychedelic make-over in honor of the upcoming production of how to get my ex girlfriend back

“_blank”>”Hair” opening Sept. 20. It was a beautiful day on Sunday, so I headed to the Arts District to check out this amazing yarn bomb display!

Winspear Opera House Dallas

Over 70 knitters from around the Dallas area emerged on the Winspear last week to cover everything that was nailed down with crocheted and knitted yarn…every piece stitched by hand…I would have loved to have dusted off my needles and participated in this. I got a bit ‘snap happy’ over all of the gorgeous knit and crocheted eye candy. I hope these pictures bring you an ounce of the ‘groovy’ feeling I had as I walked around this creative display of hippie happiness!

Wouldn’t it be cool if this is what all graffiti looked like? Nothing harmed…just a display of colorful art made with thoughtful preparation…

The Arts District is a great place to take your family on the weekends. There’s several one hour parking spots in the area….just enough time to walk around and snap some pictures and see the sites! Your kids and dogs will love the reflecting pool beside the opera house!

If you’re interested in learning to knit, contact your local yarn shop.  Most all yarn shops offer classes that range from beginner to advanced skill classes.  Here are a couple in the Dallas area that I highly recommend!

The Woolie EweThis is the largest yarn shop in the area (Plano) and they carry some of the highest quality yarns produced.  I have a hard time controlling myself when I go there!  They have a fun blog that offers occasional recipes for fun.  You’ll find lots of helpful experienced knitters there to help you get started!

The Shabby Sheep – This cozy little shop nestled in Uptown (Dallas) is filled with yummy yarns and inspiration.  They offer lots of classes and a weekly “PJ’s and Pearls” knit night.  Download their most recent calendar here. One of my favorite things about The Shabby Sheep? Abby, the shop dog…she’s yummy, warm and soft, just like the yarn!

The minute I walked into my first yarn shop, I came to realize that I have a love of texture, color and a need to create.  I really believe that this epiphany led me to continue to allow myself to explore the need for creativity in my life that I had stuffed away while I engrossed myself in my career.  I’m so thankful that I have discovered the importance of a healthy balance and the ability to allow my “right brain” to be a part of my every day life!
