I have the perfect denim shirt to try this look this weekend!  Can’t wait!!  I think the key is using a shirt with a thin lightweight fabric so you don’t get too much bulk…or either being bone thin…which I am not…

Just Shoe Me

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

I will always blame my desire to have more shoes than I need on my parents.  They owned a shoe store in East Texas…Henderson, TX, to be exact… when I was a little girl and I had every color and style made! So basically I was brainwashed…or would that be “footwashed”…at an early age…

My List Revealed

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

When Ronda Carmen described her friend, Malcolm, as “one of the most stylish people that I know”, I knew I had to find  out more about this former Houstonian!  What I found is that he has an impressive list of clientele from around the world and draws much of his inspiration from nature.  His designs are deep…as he takes the relationship with his clients and their surroundings very seriously.  I’m thrilled to share his “hidden list” with you.  Malcolm says, “My Hidden List does not feature things that are all that hidden.  Anyone who knows me well would know that these are my staple items that get me through the day, any given day, any and all seasons.  Sometimes the hidden list is the obvious list!”  Malcolm – You’re spot on!

Malcolm James Kutner photo

Native Houstonian, now living in New York City and spending a lot of time on airplanes.

Studied Liberal Arts at  Kenyon College, where I discovered my lifelong love for reading and writing, narrative and storytelling.

Graduate degree in Media and Theory at University of Sussex in England, born out of my wish to explore more vehicles and means of expression.

Studied design at the  Inchbald School of Design in London, in order to combine expression and aesthetics, and to tell stories through spaces.

Select recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship.

Principal of my own design practice for fifteen rewarding and expansive years.

Wonderful clients in various states and countries.  Projects run the gamut: townhouses, farmhouses, lofts, apartments, beach houses, modern glass boxes, urbanite crash pads,  reclusive writing cottages, expansive compounds.

Published, filmed, and featured in various print, video, and online publications

Lived and worked back and forth between London and Key West for twelve years.
Best of both worlds.

Wanderlust runs deep.  Thirty-two countries on five continents and counting.

meissen ming dragon mug photo

Meissen Ming Dragon coffee mug. ” When I moved to New York four and a half years ago, I bought this single Ming Dragon mug as a sort of housewarming gift to myself. Amongst the many things dragons symbolize in Chinese mythology are supernatural wisdom, the spirit of change and also the rhythm of Nature and the doctrine of emergence. They stand for the sun, light and the virile force of yang.     This mug references my love of travel and insistence on adventure, reminds me of the presence of higher powers, and is without question a beautifully wrought and executed design.  I can never commit to a favorite color, but when pressed, I always default to green.  It’s no surprise that the Chinese regard green as the color of the spring, when life is full of vigor and vitality, and aims for longevity and harmony.  I’ve had my coffee out of this mug every morning for four years.”
Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Classique fountain pen
Mont Blanc Meisterstuck Classique fountain pen in black resin and platinum.  ”I like the Oblique Broad nib and I do use the cartridges (and change the ink back and forth between black, blue-black, grey, and violet).  I remember that my sophomore English teacher in high school, Mr. Hawkins, used fountain pens.  I thought they were so cool and I immediately started a collection that is now quite expansive.  But this is the pen that I carry around with me everyday and use all the time.  I sometimes just write words and numbers on blank paper with it.”

moleskin notebooks
Moleskine Classic Squared Cahier notebooks.  ”I carry one of these everywhere.  They are great for note-taking, sketching, floorplanning.  Sometimes I just checkerboard pages at a time in a variety of patterns…I love doodling!  A glimpse inside my notebook would show alternating pages of lists, plans, sketches, notes, and random doodles!”
 Canon EOS 60D
Canon EOS 60D camera.I recently bought a Canon EOS 60D with a variety of lenses.  I was increasingly frustrated with how awful and untrue my pictures looked.  I use a camera not just for keeping a photographic record of my work, but also for taking photos of references, inspirations, and observations.  I did a lot of research and asked a lot of people.  I went to B&H Camera in NYC six times and stood at the counter for about an hour each time.  A purchase well-considered is a purchase well-made.  I am convert and now I am one of those people in airports who has the annoying camera bag….”
ll bean boat and tote image
Bottega Intrecciato tote
YSL tote
Book bags, or tote bags as they are more widely called.  ”I can’t get enough of them.  The LL Bean canvas “Boat and Tote” monogrammed with my MJK is an old standard:  (I have it in black on black, brown on brown, camouflage, navy on white, red on white); a Bottega Intrecciato tote in brown leather with black handles was a gift from a friend years ago and I never stop loving it.  I also love the old YSL Tanger Tote Bag in black.  I’ve had mine for eight years and it still strikes that perfect balance between old fashioned book bag.”
Malcolm, I share your love of totes!  Do you store your totes in your totes like I do?
Thank you so much for sharing those every day things that you love.  Your designs inspire us and we love the intellectual approach you take to your work.  XO!
