Yesterday I shared about the loss of my precious Princess. In September I mourned the loss of a sweet black lab, Duchess, that my ex and I loved very much. My dear friend, Kim of Dwell With Dignity, gave me this book, Dog Heaven, for comfort. I cannot tell you what a blanket of warmth this has been!
I have read this book over and over again. This is the best gift you can give someone who is grieving the loss of a pet.
If you’ve lost a cat, here’s the feline version…
What has brought you comfort when you’ve lost a pet? Did you feel guilty in getting over your grief? I would love to hear about your sweet companion that you are looking forward to seeing in heaven!

The tag line of my blog is “The secret door to all things exceptional” and the definition of exceptional was my precious dog, Princess. Sadly I had to say goodbye to her last week after she got very sick…very quickly, but I will forever treasure the 14 years of joy that she brought to my life.
Princess was a gift from my ex-husband and truly the greatest gift I’ve ever received. I had never owned a dog before, so I was given books to read and rules to follow and I was determined to be a good dog Mom and have a well-behaved pup. What I didn’t expect was a dog that would teach me more than I could have ever taught her, as she was the master of unconditional love and true devotion.
For years she fetched the paper in the morning and would sing as she held it in her mouth…so proud!
She could catch major air in her prime and would never tire of playing frisbee.
On the golf course, Princess practiced proper etiquette and could ride 18 holes and only get out for an occasional dip in the water hazards.
I will miss spooning with her, rubbing her velvet soft head and her greeting every time I walked in the front door. My house is not the same without her and until she greets me in heaven, I will miss those beautiful eyes that could see straight to my soul.
My sweet, exceptional girl…May your days in heaven be spent eating all of the treats that you want, romping through golden fields and playing fetch with the angels. I will miss you every day until I see you there…

Well, I only thought I was back…
Last week I was thrown a hear-breaking wrench that I was dreading and not expecting. The black lab that my ex-husband had when we started dating…just a puppy then…reached the end of her life here on earth. Yes…I believe all dogs go to heaven!
Duchess was a dream of a pet! She lived to please her master, and succeeded time and time again. Her one litter of pups produced 7 precious little black balls of fur that I fell in love with and cried each time one left for their new home. The one exception was the one little female we called Jane…Plain Jane…
My next door neighbors, and very dear friends, loved Duchess and decided to adopt Jane… who quickly became Annie…and Duchess and her daughter, Annie, saw each other almost every day. Annie soon grew taller than Duchess, but she never forgot that she was her mom. As any parent, Duchess felt the need to discipline Annie when she got too rambunctious and Annie would submit every time!
Duchess loved all children and they always seemed to choose her as their favorite among our dogs… Her gentle spirit drew them close and she relished in the affection they would give.
Our sweet Duchess displayed good things…unconditional love, affection, honor, loyalty, discipline, dedication…attributes that we strive to display and own. What an inspiration!
Duchess, you were such a good girl and loved us well. You will forever be missed, but never forgotten…
